Brian Calhoon is a percussionist from the San Francisco bay area who enjoys discovering new ways to combine percussion, marimba, singing and theater. Brian grew up singing, playing piano and drum set and has been playing percussion since 1996. Brian thrives on performing in a symphony hall, in a musical pit, premiering new music, singing in choir and music theater – even singing and playing the marimba simultaneously!

Brian especially enjoys inventing new solo repertoire for the instrument. In February 2009, Brian gave a recital of all music for marimba and voice where he accompanied his own singing with a marimba/vibraphone combination. His interests and adaptations range from Charles Ives to Kurt Elling to Chanticleer.

In the summer of 2008, Brian performed with Nancy Zeltsman (playing percussion, marimba, and singing) at the Zeltsman Marimba Festival (ZMF) in Los Angeles, CA. Sharing a marimba with Zeltsman, he premiered two movements of Daniel Levitan’s latest work, Marimba Four Hands. He also sang and played new arrangements by himself and Zeltsman of various Paul Simon tunes.

A California native, Brian performed in Davies Symphony Hall as a member of the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra from 2004–2007. In the summers of 2003–2005, Brian toured the United States and Europe playing in the front ensemble of the Concord Blue Devils Drum & Bugle A-Corps.

Brian completed his M.M. at the Boston Conservatory (’09) where he was selected Graduate Student Marshall at Commencement and nominated to the Pi Kappa Lambda music honor society. He completed his B.M. at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music (’07) where he earned the Dean’s Award for Community Service, and the Percussion Department Award for Recognition of Excellence. Since 2008, Brian serves as Administrative Assistant for Zeltsman Marimba Festival, Inc. He also works full-time for the Boston Conservatory Admissions Office. He currently resides in Boston, MA.
